Step inside our Double Bay Project, where we reveal the before-and-after transformation of a compact 1980s townhouse into a light-filled, resort-style family oasis. This Double Bay townhouse renovation shows how clever design can make even the smallest spaces feel spacious, functional, and effortlessly inviting.
When Shelley and Mike purchased their two-storey townhouse, it was compact, dark, and stuck in the 80’s. It felt disconnected from how they wanted to live as a busy family of four (plus Louie, the dog) and they dreamed of a fresh, functional home with spaces to connect as a family, along with quiet spots to retreat—plus a touch of “wow factor” to make every day feel special.
That’s where we came in!
A Home with Hidden Potential
From the start, it was clear this project would require some out-of-the-box thinking. The footprint was tight—just 125 square metres across two levels—and almost every room was compromised in some way.
The kitchen was cut off from the living spaces, making family life and entertaining feel cramped. A bulky staircase swallowed light and space in the centre of the home, and the two bathrooms were dated and dark.
But we could see what was possible. With the right layout, a considered palette, and clever design solutions, this could become a calm, inviting home that felt bigger than its size.
Guiding the Journey
Shelley and Mike hadn’t undertaken a renovation of this scale before, so part of our role was helping them understand the process and feel confident at every stage.
We began by mapping out a clear plan—defining what they wanted to achieve and setting realistic expectations around budget, timeline, and approvals. We guided them on where to invest for long-term value, such as custom joinery and reconfiguring the layout, and where to save, like retaining structural walls where possible.
This early clarity set the framework form everything that followed.
Reimagining the Space
One of the most significant transformations in this Double Bay townhouse renovation was the kitchen. We reworked the floor plan to create a stronger connection between the kitchen, dining, and living areas, instantly making the main level feel larger and lighter. This kitchen transformation turned what had been a small, closed-off space into a seamless, functional hub for family life, complete with an adjoining butler’s pantry and laundry, reclaimed from an under-used powder room.
The stairwell previously a bulky visual obstacle, was redesigned with a refined balustrade and a new skylight overhead to flood the centre of the home with natural light. Beneath it, we created a discreet study nook—making use of every inch without compromising flow.
Throughout the home, custom joinery added essential storage while maintaining a sense of openness. In the dining area, softly curved joinery conceals services while providing elegant display space. In the living room, a bench seat doubles as hidden storage, complemented by a striking wall-hung bookshelf that creates a functional yet beautiful corner.
Elevating the Everyday
Both bathrooms were completely reimagined to feel more spacious and uplifting. The main bathroom now feels bright, calm and welcoming, with a new skylight, natural finishes, refined tapware, and soft, layered lighting. In the ensuite, updated finishes and streamlined cabinetry that feels open and luxurious, even within a modest footprint.
Upstairs, the bedrooms were refreshed with custom joinery and carefully chosen details that make daily life feel considered and effortless. A fresh palette of soft neutrals, warm timber, and layered textures transformed dark, dated rooms into bright, relaxing spaces. Practical storage, floor-to-ceiling sheers, and thoughtful lighting helped create a sense of ease —making every day feel just a little more special.
The Result
Today, this home feels unrecognisable from where it began. What was once dark and disconnected is now bright, open, and wonderfully liveable. There are places to gather and places to pause—everything our clients hoped for, with a touch of that “wow factor” they dreamed about.
A Balance of Style and Practicality
Furnishings were carefully chosen to enhance the sense of openness while supporting a busy family lifestyle. Soft edges, warm timbers, and layered textures helped create a warm, grounded aesthetic—bringing together comfort, practicality, and a touch of style. Every choice reflected a family-friendly design approach, ensuring the home feels welcoming, durable, and easy to live in.
Throughout the process, we worked closely with Shelley and Mike to make the design journey seamless, helping them navigate key decisions—from reworking the layout, designing custom joinery to selecting tiles, finishes, and furnishings that balanced style and practicality.
